Before you started Carlisle Fields in 1976, you were the Marketing Director for Royal Globe Insurance Company. How has marketing in the insurance industry changed in the last 35 years?
Some companies have done away with the marketing division and marketing is combined with underwriting. The social portion is not as prevalent. Marketing is now more integrated in fully serving the client’s insurance needs.
What’s the best business decision you ever made?
The decision I made to go into business for myself was the best business decision I’ve made. I wanted to make my own decisions and mold my own future. I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I don’t regret it for a moment.
What’s the most important insurance decision business owners make?
The hiring of good employees is crucial to success because business is relational. My client wants personal service and my expertise so he doesn’t have to think about insurance anymore. It’s all about building a personal relationship with the business owner over a long time. This is the most important part of retaining the business that we acquire.
How do you see your role in advising commercial clients about their insurance needs?
My role is to research the market and find the best fit for the business and advise them about types and amounts of insurance so they’re protected against a catastrophic loss. I maintain my credentials as a Certified Insurance Counselor so that I remain current with the industry’s best practices.
Why did you join CCF&N?
I joined CCF&N because they have the same culture and desire as I do to take care of my clients. After 35 years it’s not just a business it’s a reflection of who I am. People really trust us. That’s why I was comfortable joining CCF&N.
How do you define success?
For me, success occurs when I’m able to assist a client in a moment of need. That’s also my greatest satisfaction. An important part of that is having a good staff and a happy and healthy workplace. We think it’s important that employees have a family life and have a healthy place to come to work.
Who inspires you?
My father inspired me with his work ethic. Tony Dungy also inspires me with the way he conducts himself with integrity and honesty.
How do you want to be remembered?
I want people to think of me as an honest, hard-working person who consistently displayed a good and honest character at all times.
